The Trials of Tribulation
Part VIII: NDP Champion Matt Shane
Fade into the DamageCast studio, Miles Bell standing by to bring you exciting... excitement!!
[Miles:] Greetings, ladies and gents! On this DamageCast issue, we're going to take a big jump at the final push into Tribulation by taking a look at the NDP Champion, the man that will defend the NDP Championship against "The Living Venus" Colleen.
Matt Shane started off in NDP as "Masked Punk", a blue-clad high-flying who's look was seemingly inspired by some of the more colorful wrestlers in Japan and Mexico. During 2003, he had many bouts with big names of NDP like Flip Staley and Jason Wesley, but his rise to the top started on December 1st, 2003. After a losing effort against Jason Wesley, a woman by the name of Nicole Dramesi made her first appearance in New Damage Prowrestling, leveling the Masked Punk as her first act. Masked Punk began a brutal feud with Nicole Dramesi stemming from that attack, and at the first-even NDP SuperCard Event, Wayward, the two were set to collide in a match, which Masked Punk won, sending his stock in NDP skyrocketing.
The next NDP SuperCard Event, RECKONING, saw Masked Punk begin interacting with the NDP Championship, as he faced off against Jason Wesley for the #1 Contendership. Masked Punk lost, but wasn't a lost cause. He continued his rise, even after being forced to give up his trademark mask and change his name - after all, a maskless wrestler can't be without mask - and would face a multiple-time World Champion in Gene Starr at the ReDeeMeR SuperCard Event as Matt Shane. Once again, Shane picked up the victory after a hellacious battle, and would set up the match we're about to dive into the archives for.
At SuperKickFest04, NDP's biggest SuperCard Event, Matt Shane challenged Flip Staley for the NDP Championship. Flip Staley had been NDP Champion for over a year, winning the NDP Championship Tournament at Wayward, and Staley successfully defended the title against the likes of Jason Wesley, Gene Starr, Mr. E, Jo Ryder, and even Masked Punk, between Wayward and SuperKickFest04. But, with management upset at the way Flip Staley represented himself during some of those title defenses, he was given an ultimatum; there would be nobody allowed down at ringside during the match, and Flip Staley had to defeat Matt Shane by pinfall, submission, or knockout to leave as NDP Champion - if Flip Staley got himself disqualified, he would lose the title!
So, from March 20, 2005, SuperKickFest04, here is Flip Staley defending the NDP Championship against Matt Shane!

[Visper:] And now, ladies and gentlemen, it's time for our long-awaited main event. It--
[Jr.:] IT'S GONNA BE A BAH GAWD SLOBBARKNOCKER!! THESE TWO BULLS ARE GONN--
[Visper:] Excuse me for interrupting you while I was talking, but this match is going to be explosive, and it's going to just generally be eff'd up. Add to the equation that at last Maelstrom, Colleen picked up a pinfall victory over NDP Champion Flip Staley in a triple threat match - thanks to some interference from Matt Shane - may prove to be the final act to push Flip Staley over the edge. The big question is, can the NDP Champion overcome all the odds, or will he find that things aren't fair when you level the playing field?
[Jr.:] Where do you come up with this stuff? Seriously. That was kinda weak.
[Visper:] Oh, shut up. Would it've been better if I screamed "BAH GAWD" and "HOSS" fifty times during it?
[Jr.:] Well, it'd have been a good start.
Cataclysmic Clash by Game Over hits, and Matt Shane makes his way to the ring, walking up the stairs and hopping over the ropes. He tests out the ropes, waiting for Flip Staley's music to kick in as his own fades. Lying Season hits, and for a moment, no one comes through the curtain.
[Visper:] Well, Flip Staley is supposed to be coming through to the arena right now...
[Jr.:] Maybe he's got a case of the BAH GAWD LIVERTAIL!!!!
[Visper:] What the hell is that supposed to mean?
[Jr.:] He's yellah.
[Visper:] He's what?
[Jr.:] A BAH GAWD COWARD!
[Visper:] Couldn't have you said that to begin with? Jeeze.
With Lying Season still playing, Flip Staley finally appears through the curtain, NDP Championship around his waist, walking slowly to the ring. He enters the ring and paces around in front of the corner post before starring at Matt Shane. The referee approaches, expecting to have Flip take the NDP Championship off his waist and hand it to him, only to be shoved aside as Flip Staley rushes Matt Shane, knocking him into the corner and beginning to lay into him as Lying Season fades out.

Everyone is banned from ringside, and Flip Staley must defeat Matt Shane to retain the NDP Championship.
[motosada]
The bell rings as Flip Staley continues to punch and kick at Matt Shane, huddled down in the corner. Flip Staley still hasn't even taken off the NDP Championship from around his waist, and the referee tries to pull Flip off of Matt as Flip continues to punch Matt in the head. The referee finally begins the DQ count, and Flip backs off at the 4, taking the NDP Championship off his waist before shoving the referee aside and smashing Matt Shane with a knee to the face, starting to beat him down again.
[Visper:] Now, as you saw there, when the referee made that DQ count, Flip backed off pretty quickly. I'm sure Flip would just love to walk out of here with the NDP Championship at any cost, but if he gets himself disqualified, he loses the NDP Championship.
[Jr.:] If Flip Staley wants to walk out of Viking Hall the NDP Champion tonight, then he absolutely has to beat Flip Staley, either by pinfall or submission. It certainly puts him between a rock and a hard place, but maybe if he'd have defended it fairly in the first place, he wouldn't be in this predicament at all.
The referee wastes no time in starting the DQ count right away this time, and when Flip backs off at 4, the referee gets between him and Matt Shane and threatens a disqualification if Flip Staley doesn't let Matt Shane out from the corner. Flip yells back at the referee as Matt Shane gets to his feet, bleeding from above his right eye. Flip shoves the referee aside and is heading toward Matt, and Matt lays in with a toe kick to Flip. Matt explodes out of the corner with a few punches of his own, connecting to the jaw of Flip Staley before taking the NDP Champion down with an o-soto-gari. Matt mounts and starts punching at the head of Flip Staley, getting in a good eight shots before standing up and backing away. Flip gets to his feet and Matt nails a DDT. Flip is back up, kick to Matt's midsection, Flip goes for the brainbuster but Matt hooks the leg and starts driving his knee into Flip's midsection before hitting a snap suplex on Flip. Scoop slam from Matt Shane, Matt pulls Flip to his feet, Irish whip into the corner, Matt charges, body splash from Matt Shane and Flip moves out of the way, causing Matt Shane to smash into the corner! Flip Staley pulls Matt into the front chancre again, lifts him for the suplex, but Matt flips off Flip, lands with his back to Staley's, reaches his hands up and hits a sit-out neckbreaker on Staley! Matt Shane heads up to the top turnbuckle, diving elbow drop connects!!
Matt pulls Flip to his feet and Irish whips him to the ropes, Flip reverses the Irish whip, slides under Matt's legs as Matt bounces off the ropes, Matt off the ropes again and nails Flip with a shoulder block, knocking Flip out of the ring!
[Jr.:] BAH GAWD! What a shoulder block from Matt Shane! Flip Staley got completely cleared out of the ring on that one!
[Visper:] That can't help Flip's state of mind right now. He hit the barrier pretty hard during his landing, and you know that he's thinking about just saying the hell with it and smashing Matt Shane with a lead pipe or somethin'. And maybe with what happened to Aika Sugiyama earlier in the night against Mr. E, Flip might just want to cut his losses and walk away with what he can tonight.
Matt Shane paces in the ring, waiting for Flip to get back inside the ring. Flip takes full advantage of the liberal outside count, waiting until the 17 count until he heads to the apron. He yells at the referee to back Matt Shane away from the ropes, and the ref complies as Flip enters the ring. The two tie-up and Flip forces Matt back into the ropes, sending him off with an Irish whip. Flip ducks under Matt Shane again as he bounces off the ropes, Matt off the ropes again and comes back at Flip, head scissors from Matt Shane! Matt pulls Flip up and Flip with a thumb to the eyes, and hits the Hooked Cross! Matt scoots up, shaking his head, and Flip hits a headlock takedown, and he starts sitting up high, squeezing and twisting to apply torque to the ground headlock. Matt Shane starts turning, and starts getting to his feet, forcing Flip up as well. Matt backs up into the ropes and attempts to throw Flip off with an Irish whip, but Flip skids to his knees and stops the forward momentum. Flip pops to his feet and tosses Matt over him again with that headlock takedown.
[Visper:] Flip Staley has completely switched gears in this match-up. He started off with that big attack on Matt Shane and now has slowed the match down to his pace. He's working on the neck of Matt Shane, setting him up for the Staley Concept.
Matt Shane tries to get back to his feet, rolling up and forcing Flip to his feet again. Matt takes to the ropes again, trying to shove Flip off, and Flip slides down again. He stands back up and tries to flip Matt over, Matt has leverage too low for Flip to roll it over, and Matt lifts him up and hits a big back drop on Flip. Matt rolls to his feet and shakes the cobwebs loose, pulling Flip to his feet. Irish whip from Matt Shane, Matt goes for a lariat, Flip ducks, off the ropes, spear from Flip Staley!! Flip pulls Matt to his feet, Manhattan drop, and Flip follows up the Manhattan drop immediately with a big spinebuster in one fluid motion! Flip with a quick neckbreaker, takes to the ropes and nails Matt back to the canvas with a back elbow smash. Flip pulls Matt up by the back of his tights and starts smashing his elbow into Shane's neck. After a few elbow smashes, Flip grabs Matt's hair and pulls his head back, shouting something at Matt before nailing a very owie-inducing facecrusher. Another spinebuster from Flip Staley, and he floats into the cover; one, two, th-- kickout!
Flip Staley pulls Matt Shane to his feet and shoves Matt into the ropes, wrapping Matt's arms over the top rope and begins laying in, trying to increase the already-heavy blood flow from Matt Shane's forehead. The referee tries to pull Flip off of Matt Shane, but Flip is attacking Matt Shane like a man possessed. The referee begins to DQ count again, and just like all the times before, Flip backs off at 4. The referee tries to pull Matt out of the ropes, gets his right arm unhooked and Flip charges Matt Shane, Matt drops and pulls down the top rope with him, sending Flip Staley out of the ring!!
[Visper:] What an impact Flip made on the floor there.
[Jr.:] Flip's own hotheadedness caught up to him there. He got frustrated that he couldn't put Matt Shane away with that spinebuster and just went berserk. And now he's lying on the outside of the ring, holding his neck because he got overzealous. So, hah.
Flip Staley slowly gets back to his feet, hunched over, back to the ring. With the ref's count at 8, he turns around only to see Matt Shane coming over the top rope with a slingshot plancha! Matt Shane connects, and the two tumble to the floor once again. Matt gets up after a few moments, pulls Flip up, and rolls him into the ring, getting back in himself at the ref's 15 count. Body slam from Matt Shane, follows up with a leg drop across Flip's neck. Matt pulls Flip back to his feet, armwrenches Flip, pulls him in to a big DDT. Matt covers; one, two, th-- kickout!
Matt pulls Flip back to his feet, Irish whip, hip toss from Matt Shane. Matt takes to the ropes, drives his elbow into the chest of the downed NDP Champion. Matt off the ropes again, and another elbow drop. Matt takes to the ropes again, goes for the elbow drop but Flip rolls out of the way and Matt lands on nothin'! Flip and Matt both back up to their feet, cyclone whip from Matt Shane! And another! And a third! Flip back up again, drop toe hold to Matt Shane. Shane's back up, Flip with a cyclone whip of his own. Matt up again, taken down with a snapmare, and Flip starts trying to lock on the Emerald City Stretch, but Matt starts punching Flip in the head, knocking Flip off becore he can get the Buffalo Sleeper applied. Matt Shane with a whip to the ropes, spine bomb; one, two, thr-- KICKOUT!!
Matt pulls Flip back up and Flip starts driving his fist into Matt's gut. Matt backs off, Flip is back to his feet, reaches out and pulls Matt over backwards, enzui knee crash from Flip Staley.
[Jr.:] GAWD! WHAT A MOVE!
[Visper:] Like a... reverse DDT onto Flip's knee. -shudders- That ain't pretty.
Flip Staley pulls Matt to his feet and whips him into the corner, chases Matt in, Matt with a back flip over the ropes a la Tiger Mask, Flip impacts the corner, Matt Shane with a somersault kick to the back of Flip Staley! Flip stumbles backward out of the corner, Matt spins him around, sets Flip on his shoulders, AcuPUNKture!! Matt covers; one! two! thre-- BAH GAWD NEARFALL!!
Flip rolls out of the ring, collapsing to the floor. Matt exits the ring in pursuit, and pulls Flip to his feet. Flip cheap-shots Matt with a punch to the throat and as Matt starts hacking, holding his neck, Flip grabs his arm and whips him into the ring stairs, knocking the top set off! Flip pulls Matt back up, backs him away from the stairs, Irish whip to the stairs, Matt reverses, and Flip gets tripped up by the lower set, smashing him into the corner post before he lands on the top set of stairs with a hearty thud!!
[Visper:] What a sick impact!! That one might just've done Flip Staley in!
[Jr.:] SOMEONE CALL 911!! FLIP STALEY MIGHT BE CONCUSSED! SOMEONE CALL 911!! SOMEONE CAALLLL 911~~~!!!!
[Visper:] No, seriously.
Flip doesn't seem to share the opinion of the two announcers, and begins picking himself up. Flip drags himself onto the apron, getting back into the ring at the referee's 18 count. Matt closes in on Flip, Flip with a toe kick, Dynamite Punch Rush!!! Irish whip from Flip Staley, smashes Matt Shane with a back elbow. Flip pulls Matt back up, sets Matt on his shoulders, going for the Death Valley driver, Matt slides off, hooks Flip's arm, ROCKER DROPPER~! Matt with an Irish whip, overhead belly-to-belly! DDT from Matt, pulls Flip up, goes for the DDT again, but Flip plants his feet and pops his hips, set-up for that spinebuster again, and Flip drops Matt face-first on the top turnbuckle! Flip takes off the ropes as Matt stumbles around, lariat-- ducked! FLIP STALEY JUST TOOK OUT THE REF~~!!!
[Jr.:] BAH GAWD REF BUMP!!!!
Flip sees his opportunity; low blow to Matt Shane! Flip slides out of the ring and pushes the time keeper off her chair, grabbing it and sliding it into the ring. Flip reenters the ring, grabs the chair and beats it against the canvas as Matt Shane starts getting back up, holding himself in places. He shakes his head, turns around, Flip swing the chair-- MATT SHANE CAUGHT THE CHAIR!! LOW KICK TO FLIP STALEY AND THE CROWD ERUPTS!! Flip drops the chair, holding himself, Matt scoops him up, CATATONIC!! CATATONIC ONTO THE CHAIR!! Matt covers, but the ref is still down!
[Crowd:] ONE! TWO! THREE! FOUR! FIVE! SIX! SEVEN!
Matt breaks his pin and checks on the referee. The ref starts to get back to his feet, SCHOOL BOY!! SCHOOL BOY FROM FLIP STALEY! ONE! TWO!! THRE-- KICKOUT!!!
Matt's up, Flip's up, both men go for the lariat and take each other down! Matt with the nip-up! Flip's back to his feet, Matt with the Superkick, Flip ducks! Flip pulls Matt back, going for the Pike Place Cutter! Flip lifts Matt back overhead, goes for the Cutter, but Matt grabs Flip around the waist and lifts him up, German suplex! Matt keeps the waistlock applied, pulls Flip up, slides his arms up into a full nelson, yelling at the crowd "SHOULD I?!? SHOULD I?!?" and the crowd responds- DRAGON SUPLEX!! Matt Shane keeps the full nelson applied, rolls Flip up to his feet again, hooks in the double chickenwing-- TIGER SUPLEX!! Matt Shane rolls Flip up again, keeping the double chickenwing applied, both men up to their feet, Matt rolls Flip around, front facelock, Matt lifts Flip up for a suplex, sets him up in the corner-- PUNK BUSTER!! [Miles:] Matt Shane has been NDP Champion since SuperKickFest04, nearly three years ago. He hasn't had the easiest road to the Championship, or the easiest road as Champion, including the main event of our last SuperCard Event, FORSAKEN, which saw him defend the title in a Rolling Two-Falls Match against Adam Galcian of ARMADA, Mr. E, and "The Living Venus" Colleen, a unique match that could have easily seen him lose the NDP Championship without being able to stop it. He came through in the end, however, and his future rests on this Sunday, at Tribulation.
And, since we're talking about the NDP Champion, it's only right that the Champ is here, in the DamageCast studio!
Pan over to show that the Champ is, indeed, here!
[Miles:] Well, Matt Shane, it's been a while! Good to see you again! As I'm sure you know, we're here on your very own DamageCast!
[Matt Shane:] Ah, Miles! I see you've still got your job here stating the obvious!
[Miles:] Er, uh... Yes, well, this isn't about me. This is about you, going into Tribulation. First things first, I have to ask the question that NDP fans have been itching to know. Earlier this summer, news broke out that, in the other promotion you wrestle actively for, CEP, you went through a sort of... metamorphosis, for lack of a better word. You went from being the big hero, to, well, more of an anti-hero. Why the sudden change, and what effect will this have on you, as the NDP Champion?
[Matt Shane:] *Sigh* Ya see, Miles, while NDP's been on an extended "break", back in CEP, I was taking a long hard look at where I want to be right now. I wasn't happy with where I was headed; I didn't like being marketed as the big hero that always saves the day. I never wanted to become the cheesy "good guy" character you might see in other feds. But that's what I became... Hell, next thing you know, I prolly would've been, I dunno, pretending to be a marine, and calling people turkey sandwiches.
[Miles:] Imagine that...
[Matt Shane:] So, I did something about it. I gave up on "rescuing" people in distress. I gave up concerning myself with things that weren't my business. I gave up on being the hero. Instead of playing by the rules, I started writing them. And yeah, the fans turned their backs on me at first, but that was understandable. But once the "incident" happened, the fans and I were brought together again because of a like mindedness.
[Miles:] Ooh, what "incident"?
[Matt Shane:] ...? You follow CEP enough that you know about me changing, but you DON'T know about what happened over the summer? Sheesh... Well, I can't talk much about it, being that I'm on NDP's time, and not CEP's, but the basis is, the BIGGEST, most historical moment in CEP history was completely shattered, after a greedy, arrogant little air headed SOB STOLE the CEP World Championship from me AND some one who deserves it just as much as I do, by winning it in the worst possible way. I may be looking out for myself more, these days, but that just pisses me off, the way some one can disrespect CEP's championship like that. If crap like that happened in NDP, I'd be just as mad.
[Miles:] And, that brings me back to my original question; how will all of this have an effect on you, as the champion of NDP?
[Matt Shane:] Honestly? Not too much. Sure, I'm a little more cocky and edgy these days, but I think the fans have warmed back up to me. BUT! The big thing this whole situation has done for me, is given me more incentive to keep the NDP Championship around my waist, now that I'm no longer the CEP World Champion.
[Miles:] Well, that about wraps up this DamageCast. A big thank you to the champ for coming in for this interview!
Now, we won't be seeing you here again before the Tribulation SuperCard Event, but we will cross paths again! And when we do, the DamageCast will finally begin showing its real potential, by bringing you exclusive matches and even more exclusive interviews from the superstars of New Damage Prowrestling! So, until next time, be safe and buy merchandise!
Fade out as the NDP Signature begins to play to the video's end.

-- Back to the Studio --
[Miles:] Matt Shane has been NDP Champion since SuperKickFest04, nearly three years ago.
